X.400 Bridgehead for Exchange 2007 - Enabling the Microsoft Exchange Messaging server to communicate via the X.400 protocol.
With the release of Exchange 2007, Microsoft has taken the decision to drop support for the X.400 protocol. Previous versions of the Exchange server included the capability to connect to other X.400 messaging servers via the P1 protocol, a feature particularly useful and relevant in central government, defence and finance circles whom have backbone infrastructure based upon X.400.
Microsoft has engaged with Boldon James, a long term development partner, to bridge the gap for those users wishing to migrate to Exchange 2007 but maintain connectivity with the deployed X.400 infrastructure. In response Boldon James has developed the X.400 Bridgehead for Exchange 2007 enabling organisations to deploy the next generation of Exchange server and maintain connectivity for its X.400 infrastructure.
Key Benefits
- Bridges the gap for those organisations wishing to migrate to Exchange 2007 whilst requiring connectivity to X.400 infrastructure.
- Is available from a trusted Gold certified and development partner with more than 15 years experience of X.400 messaging and 10 years experience working with Exchange.
- Supports the full X.400 P1 (2003) protocol and is tried and tested with all of the major X.400 MTA's available and in use today.
- Extensible to support bespoke requirements i.e. support for Civil Aviation and Military message handling requirements are already available.
- Cost effectiveness and value for money are also high on the X.400 Bridgeheads list of benefits. Licence charges and support for the Bridgehead are extremely competitive and the simplified admin and management interface via Exchange really deliver genuine COTS benefits.
Key Features
- Will retain the look and feel of Exchange i.e. it is packaged as an Exchange server extension with comprehensive documentation.
- Administration is provided by a Microsoft Management Console and full use of the Exchange Server and Active Directory tools is made.
- Supports the latest 1999 ITU X.400 standards.
- Supports multiple message types including X.400 P2, X.400 P22, X.400 P772 and NATO STANAG 4406
How it works
The Boldon James X.400 Bridgehead is packaged, as previously discussed, as an Exchange 2007 Server Foreign Connector. The product is installed on an Exchange 2007 Hub Transport Role and once installed and configured your Exchange Organisation can be connected to any X.400 infrastrcutre. Exchange 2007 and Outlook 2007 still support the use of X.400 Addresses therefore there is no difference in terms of usability to the X.400 Bridgehead support in Exchange 2003. To the administrator it appears as an easy to use MMC snap-in that has the look and feel of other Exchange server administration user interfaces. The Bridgehead integrates via standard Exchange API’s and utilizes Isode X.400 message transfer agent (MTA) to enable X.400 P1 connectivity with other X.400 environments.

Licensing and Use
In Exchange 5.5 (SP4) the X.400 Bridgehead is issued by Microsoft as a separate option. The Bridgehead Server extension is a standard configurable feature inside Exchange 2003. For Exchange 2007 the X.400 Bridgehead is available from Boldon James.
