Controlled Unclassified Information Primer or CUI 101

Sensitive data exists throughout the federal government and its contracting partners. It resides on fileservers, in emails with or without attachments, in portable computers and smart phones, in storage devices like USB drives, and in bulk data transfers for disaster recovery and/or between agencies. Agencies and contractors need a cost-effective way to enforce and manage data labelling for CUI (controlled unclassified information) compliance.

This CUI Primer will be useful to anyone looking to understand the basics of CUI, as it briefly:

  • Introduces the Presidential Order that called for policies for controlled unclassified information and outlines its key elements
  • Discusses how NARA (National Archives and Records Administration) is working to set the CUI structure
