SAFEagent - A Microsoft Exchange to XML multi purpose gateway

SAFEagent is a Microsoft Exchange based Mailbox Agent that can be used as the basis for implementing a wide variety of automated applications such as Archiving, Profiling and Fax Gateway within a Defence or Formal Messaging environment. In addition SAFEAgent supports interfaces to Microsoft BizTalk, SharePoint as well as many other XML Applications.

Organisations are continually looking for more and better ways to automate their business processes. The automated handling of messages is no exception, with specific mailboxes defined to receive messages relating to identified business functions.

The key is to be able to present the full range of information passed with a message in a form that lends itself to processing by a wide variety of applications. Presenting the message information to a published XML schema allows SQL, Windows.NET framework, BizTalk, SharePoint or indeed any other XML compatible system to process the messages.

Using our intimate knowledge of the Microsoft Exchange internal architecture Boldon James has developed a simple to use XML -Exchange Gateway that supports the input/output of messages to/from a Microsoft Exchange Server on behalf of one or more mailboxes.

SAFEAgent works with all types of Exchange Messages, including simple SMTP and NATO standard Military Messages, and even supports US Defense Messaging System (DMS) Standard.

Features and Benefits

  • XML interchange format: All message contents presented within an XML format file.
  • Military messaging support: Ensures META (label) data is also converted accurately.
  • Multiple mailbox support: Each SAFEAgent service can monitor one or more mailboxes.
  • Multiple Services: Multiple services can be configured (note mailboxes cannot be shared across services).
  • Message Response support: The action to be taken for each message is determined by the 3rd Party application (e.g. Delete, Move, Forward).
  • Different applications support: Each service can be configured to support different 3rd Party application requirements.
  • XML Origination – A user or 3rd party application can originate a message in XML for onward routing through Exchange via SAFEagent.

How it Works

The message contents (Security Label, Elements of Service and attachments) are written to an XML file for subsequent processing by a 3rd Party application. The 3rd Party application can then indicate to SAFEagent what should be done with the original message. The action to be taken including delete, move or forward the message. If a message is forwarded, then the forwarded message is sent by the agent’s mailbox rather than the original recipient’s mailbox.

SAFEagent also supports XML origination where a user or 3rd party application can send original XML information to SAFEagent for onward routing via Exchange server.
