German Bundeswehr Standardises on Boldon James for STANAG 4406 Formal Messaging

Federal Armed Forces of Germany Successfully Deploys the NuKomBW 2000 Military Message Handling System (MMHS)

Maidenhead, Berkshire, U.K. – January 9th, 2007 – Boldon James, a leading provider of Secure Formal Messaging solutions, today announced that the German Bundeswehr have successfully deployed Boldon James’ SAFEmail as a fundamental component of the Nukom Message Handling System NuKomBw (Phase 1) for secure communications to the levels of ‘Secret’ / ‘NATO Secret’ implemented by EADS (European Aeronautic Defence & Space company) as prime contractor.

Boldon James plays a key role in communications for Defence, Military, Intelligence and Homeland Security organisations around the world by enabling them to safely utilise COTS Email & Instant Messaging applications over standards based messaging infrastructures, such as X400 or Microsoft Exchange, to transmit coded and secret messages with assurance over a network.

This project began 2 ½ years ago when EADS won the contract to provide a suitable MMHS for the German Armed Forces. After selecting Boldon James as the premier provider of scalable formal messaging solutions, our User Client SAFEmail underwent stringent testing prior to the Phase 1 deployment. Phase 1 consisted of approximately 100 Client installations following construction of the infrastructure, which is distributed across 245 sites, including a redundant server-architecture approximating 100 servers in 14 locations.

NuKomBw interoperates with legacy systems of the Bundeswehr and with current and planned  systems at NATO and various international partners. The system has been designed to maintain an integrated directory service which keeps a current email address of the entire Federal Armed Forces, along with those of its allies and NATO. In order to guarantee secure communications, components certified by the German National Security Agency (BSI) were applied, such as SINA 'Sichere Inter Network Architecture' and digital signature and encoding based on the BSI-standard SPHINX.

Phase 2 continues to roll-out to 50,000 users and is planned to start in 2007.

During the same week that NuKomBw went live, a pilot system for the NATO Messaging system (NMS) was being delivered jointly by Boldon James and EADS Friedrichshafen to The Hague to be evaluated by NATO´s NC3A (NATO C3 Agency). This Pilot System is based on a similar system architecture to that of NuKomBw.
