Boldon James to Work with SITTI to Provide an AFTN to AMHS Gateway to Italy
ENAV S.p.A. (ENAV), the Italian Company in charge of controlling and supporting Italian air traffic, has asked S.I.T.T.I. S.p.A. (SITTI), its reference partner in the Air Traffic Communication field, and Boldon James to provide an evaluation AFTN to AMHS gateway. The purpose of the gateway is to establish a test connection between Italian AFTN terminals and an AMHS system.
The test, set to start in October of this year, will be with an external AMHS where ENAV wish to prove interoperability with a system that is not internal and proprietary. Following satisfactory testing ENAV expect to proceed to a live production environment by the end of this year providing new equipment across Italy 18 months hence.
The gateway is a result of a joint development effort between Boldon James and SITTI and is built on Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Microsoft Windows and Exchange products. The Boldon James part of the system, interfaces with Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN) via an Extended Markup Language (XML) like interface. It has been designed to be very easy to use allowing the S.I.T.T.I AFTN switch and terminals to talk to the Boldon James AMHS gateway quickly and easily. Once in AMHS format in the Microsoft Exchange environment messages may be accessed, (Read, Reply, Forward, Sort and Archive) using Microsoft Outlook (Traditional or Web implementations).
Mario Scovenna, Technical Manager at SITTI, commented, 'We needed to find a partner who, at a minimum supported ICAO DOC 9705, and could offer a choice of either X.25, OSI or TCP/IP. Boldon James solution fulfilled all of these requirements. Boldon James has also been a responsive and informative partner in helping us to interface their AMHS gateway with our AFTN switch.'
Stuart Battersby, Director of Business Development at Boldon James commented 'We have implemented our AMHS solution on a Microsoft platform and are delighted SITTI have chosen to work with us to integrate their AFTN system with our solution. We will continue to work positively with SITTI and ENAV and continue building upon our excellent relationships.'
The Boldon James AMHS to AFTN Gateway is a high performance multi-protocol message gateway that conforms to the International Civil Aviation organisations (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) for Aeronautical Telecommunications Message Handling System (ATSMHS) applications. The gateway offers bi-directional message translation between the AFTN and the ATN/AMHS.
