About Us

Boldon James was acquired by QinetiQ on the 24th October 2007. Our growth and position in the secure formal messaging market has been growing steadily stronger over the last few years, demonstrated by significant deployments in the  U.S. DoD and the German Bundeswehr, alongside a 260,000 seat competitive takeout in the U.K. MoD. This acquisition provides Boldon James access to resources that will quickly broaden our solution set to meet the evolving requirements in the secure information exchange marketplace. We will also benefit from an enhanced route to market that will accelerate our growth outside established countries and into the non-defence government sector.Crewe Office

QinetiQ are a publicly listed company generating £1.2b in sales in 2006. This organization was formally part of the U.K. MoD (known as DERA, Defence Evaluation & Research Agency) providing advanced research & development services and security consulting. They now hold trusted partner status with a number of governments and MoD’s around the world, and have extensive experience in the security solutions area, where the synergies with Boldon James should be quickly realised.

Boldon James’ main business is the provision of Formal Messaging software solutions to defence and homeland security, including various Intelligence services and other government organizations around the globe. We are generally recognised as being the leader in military messaging COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) solutions. We have 60 messaging customers with 1.5m high and medium grade clients being deployed in the U.K., U.S., Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific.

Our knowledge and experience of messaging, especially X.400 / X.500 & Directories, dates back to 1990. Our involvement with Microsoft started early 1996 in response to requirements from the U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) for the worlds first COTS based secure E-mail system. Our relationship with Microsoft has since become extensive and as such we were recently elevated to ‘Global Go To Market Partner’ for messaging in Defence as well as having Gold Partner status.

Since 1996 our product portfolio has steadily expanded from Microsoft Exchange add-ons to include Instant Messaging, Directories and Gateways for both Military, Aeronautical and Homeland Security applications. Through a combination of our extensive knowledge of Defence environments, our customers trust in us, and our technical superiority, we are proud to make you aware of the following noteworthy achievements:

  • 1st ever deployed global ‘email + attachment’  messaging system for a military customer (U.S. Deptartment of Defence) U.S. DoD
  • 1st ever deployment of a globally centralised Defence Messaging System (DMS) for U.S. DoD
  • Contract won for 2nd ever deployment of a globally centralised defence messaging system for the U.K. MoD (19 disparate messaging systems, as above), namely ATLAS DII
  • 1st ever Homeland Security contract for the centralisation of formal messaging between multiple agencies (U.K. government)
  • Worlds first deployed ACP145 Gateway
  • Exclusive Global MS Partner status for Secure Messaging in Defence
  • Involvement in ‘future deployed’ projects such as Low Bandwidth (STANAG 4406 Annex E) ,IP Radio, Handheld and Instant Messaging.

The organization is 21 years old, U.K. headquartered with local country sales operations. We currently employ 70 people, a number of whom have extensive Intelligence and Military backgrounds. The company has a very strong balance sheet, is cash flow positive and is benefiting from consistent growth in world-wide demand for secure messaging solutions. Our deal sizes for larger countries have exceeded US$5m and are delivered by our Professional Services group in conjunction with partners. Our largest deal to date is for US$23m.

We have several Global Systems Integration partner relationships which incorporate our software into their Military Message Handling Solutions (MMHS) as integral components. We also have a number of bespoke developments, on behalf of and jointly with Microsoft and HP that are resold as part of their commercially available standard products.
