AMHS Messaging Server - Based upon Microsoft Exchange, a low cost low risk Air Traffic Service Message handling system (AMHS) solution
Our Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS) Messaging Server supports communications over X.400 protocols in accordance with AMHS SARPS standards and is based on the X.400 OSI standards defined by OSI/CCITT (latterly ITU). But, because it’s based upon Microsoft’s Exchange Server, it offers civil aviation organisations a reliable, easy to use, cost effective AMHS solution.
Systems architectures based purely on X.400 clients and messaging servers can’t match the user exposure, economies of scale, reliability and ease of use of a Microsoft Exchange Server. As such the adoption of an architecture based solely upon X.400 servers carries greater risk and significantly more investment.
Our cost effective and low risk approach uses Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Web Access to provide the client capability and Microsoft Exchange Server to provide the server (Message Transfer Agent / Message Store capability).

AMHS Messaging Server architecture utilising Microsoft Exchange server at the core
This approach has two key benefits:
- It removes the need for an X.400 client communicating via P7 at the client desktop, and instead uses COTS Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Web Access
- It maintains the P1 X.400 interface (over TCP/IP or OSI) to the outside ATN as defined by ICAO SARPS to support interoperability with other Civil Aviation Authorities and states.
This architecture is well proven in our Military Message Handling Systems (MMHS) solutions with key installations in both the US Department of Defence and UK MoD.
Key Benefits
- Utilises COTS software to reduce cost and implementation times
- COTS Message Handling Systems are well proven and deployed within the Defence sector
- We can provide all your AMHS requirements including the Messaging Server, AFTN-AMHS Gateway, Outlook Web Access and OSI Transport Stack.
Key Features
- Fully compliant with SARPS X.400 AMHS standards and requirements
- Our AMHS utilises modern COTS platforms for improved security, reliability, performance and administration
- Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server provide additional features including calendaring, notes, tasks, public folders and address books
- Microsoft Exchange Server can also act as a multi-function gateway to other email clients/systems including X.400, SMTP, MAPI, IMAP, POP3, HTTP, Lotus Notes and CCMail.
